Overview
Grade point average, or GPA, is a summary of your academic performance based on course grades and, in many systems, the credit value of each course. A semester GPA measures one term. A cumulative GPA combines multiple terms and may include different courses, credits, or grading scales.
The most important distinction is between an unweighted and a weighted GPA. An unweighted GPA gives each letter grade a standard point value, regardless of whether a course is described as honors, advanced, or regular. If every class carries the same number of credits, you can average the grade-point values directly. When credits differ, do not simply average the course GPAs; the higher-credit classes should have more influence.
A cumulative GPA requires one additional step. Multiply your current cumulative GPA by the credits already completed to estimate existing quality points. Add the quality points and credits from the new semester, then divide the combined quality points by the combined credits. For instance:
New cumulative GPA = (existing quality points + new quality points) ÷ (existing credits + new credits)

This does not tell the student exactly what letter grades are required until the course credits and grading scale are considered. It does show that a mix around the B-to-B-plus range may be relevant under a scale that assigns those values. Example 2: Comparing the effect of course credits. Imagine two courses with current grades of A and C. If both are worth 3 credits, their combined grade points are 18 on an unweighted 4.0 scale, for an average of 3.0 across those credits. If the A is a 1-credit class and the C is a 4-credit class, the quality points are 4 and 8, producing 12 points across 5 credits, or 2.40. The second result better reflects the larger course load.
Example 3: Tracking improvement. Recalculate after a major exam or project rather than after every small assignment. Compare the new estimate with the previous one, then identify which inputs changed. If your GPA moved less than expected, check whether the assignment had a small weighting, whether another grade fell, or whether the class has more credits than you originally entered.
